DAY 1

AUSTRALIA – BEIJING, CHINA

Our Escorted Escape begins today as we fly from Australia to China. Tonight will be spent in the air en-route to Beijing.

DAY 2

BEIJING, CHINA

Today we arrive in Beijing, a thriving city which is the country’s political, economic and cultural centre. On arrival we will be transferred to our hotel. Spend the afternoon at your leisure before we gather for a welcome meeting this evening.

DAY 3

BEIJING, CHINA

Visit Beijing’s many wonderful sights today. Discover the fascinating history and significance of the Temple of Heaven, set in beautiful parklands. We continue to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the world’s largest palace complex. This evening we enjoy a group welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 4

BEIJING, CHINA

Today we set off on an unforgettable excursion to visit one of China’s most popular destinations, the Great Wall of China. The wall stretches some 5,000 kilometres across China’s mountainous northern frontier. This evening we will experience a spectacular performance and dinner.

DAY 5

ON TRAIN

This morning we board the overnight express train which takes us north to Mongolia. On board, enjoy the amazing scenery as the train tackles the mountains before descending to the arid lands of Inner Mongolia, and onwards to the very heart of Asia.

DAY 6

ULAANBAATAR, MONGOLIA

We awaken on the train to stunning views of the south Gobi Desert. This afternoon we arrive in Ulaanbaatar where we explore the city and visit the National History Museum, which holds a collection of over 57,000 objects from the pre-history of Mongolia to the end of the 20th century. In the evening we witness a cultural performance where you will hear the unique traditional Mongolian throat singing.

DAY 7

TERELJ NATIONAL PARK, MONGOLIA

This morning we will explore the Gandan Khiid Monastery where we mingle with the ruby-robed monks both young and old. We travel through to the countryside retreat of Terelj National Park, where we visit the famous Turtle Rock and get a glimpse into traditional Mongolian life by visiting a local nomadic family. Tonight we will be staying in a ger – the traditional dwelling of the Mongolian people.

DAY 8

ON TRAIN

We return to Ulaanbaatar, one of the world’s most remote capitals, where we visit the 40m tall equestrian statue of Genghis Khan on horseback. We will then have some free time prior to boarding our train to Siberia.

DAY 9

LAKE BAIKAL, RUSSIA

We arrive into Irkutsk in the early afternoon and transfer to Lake Baikal. Over 600 kilometres long and up to 80 kilometres wide, Baikal contains 20 percent of the earth’s fresh water and is home to many unique species. We will enjoy sightseeing stops along the way to our guesthouse, including the Museum of Wooden Architecture.

LAKE BAIKAL, RUSSIA

Enjoy a full day exploring the incredible 25 million-year-old, UNESCO listed Lake Baikal. Meander along the lakeshore, hop on a chairlift or have a swim! We will also visit the Limnological Museum in Listvyanka and learn about the history of the lake and its fauna and flora.

DAY 11

IRKUTSK, RUSSIA

We return to Irkutsk in the morning and take in the beautiful scenery en-route. We visit a region where Shamanism is still practiced and experience the fascinating traditions of the Buryats, the largest indigenous group in Siberia.

DAY 12

ON TRAIN

Begin today with a city tour of Irkutsk. Old buildings and timeworn mansions lend a beauty to this remote but flourishing city, often called “The Paris of Siberia”. Visit the central market, cathedrals and admire the old buildings with intricate wooden lacework, before boarding the train this afternoon for a 2 night journey.

Life on board is a destination in itself! Mingle with the locals and learn some new phrases. As the train pulls into the many stations along the way, hop off and greet the Babushkas selling their homemade goodies and fresh produce on the platform – you may wish to purchase some fresh local snacks to enjoy on the train.

DAY 14

YEKATERINBURG, RUSSIA

After arriving in Yekaterinburg in the early afternoon we’ll transfer to our hotel. The city is rich in architectural monuments, museums as well as theatres, and you’ll have some free time to explore at leisure before regrouping for a group dinner.

DAY 15

YEKATERINBURG, RUSSIA

Yekaterinburg, a city founded by Peter the Great in 1723, is situated just 40 kilometres inside of Asia. Today we’ll embark on a city tour where we take in its history, including a visit to Romanov’s Church and the Europe/Asia Obelisk, which marks the continental border.

DAY 16

ON TRAIN

A mid-morning departure sees us bid farewell to Asia as we cross the Ural Mountains and enter Europe aboard the train to Moscow. As we boom over the steel bridges spanning Siberia’s nerve system of 5,000 rivers, the flickering silvers and greens of the birch forest speed past the train window.

DAY 17

MOSCOW, RUSSIA

Our train pulls into the Station in the capital of Moscow mid-morning. We have the remainder of the day to see many of the city’s main sights, including the famed Red Square and iconic St. Basil’s Cathedral, built from 1555 to 1561 on orders from Ivan the Terrible.

DAY 18

MOSCOW, RUSSIA

Today is a full day of sightseeing in Moscow. Explore the Kremlin, the fortified complex in the centre of Moscow that overlooks the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil’s Cathedral and Red Square to the east, and the Alexander Garden to the west. Go behind its walls to visit the Armoury Chamber with its vast array of treasures.

DAY 19

MOSCOW, RUSSIA

Start today with a visit to the Cosmonaut museum, dedicated to Russian space exploration and holding over 85,000 artefacts. We follow with an interesting tour of the palatial metro rail system draped in chandeliers, mosaics and baroque bas-reliefs. The afternoon is free for you to explore the streets, shops and cafes or revisit some of the Moscow’s iconic sights.

DAY 20

ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

This morning we catch the four hour fast train to St Petersburg, where we will enjoy an afternoon at the impressive Hermitage Museum, the 2nd largest art museum in the world, along with Palace Square. This is one of the best times to visit St Petersburg, as the city celebrates its “White Nights” annual summer festival.

DAY 21

ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

This morning we will visit St Isaac’s Cathedral and Peter & Paul Fortress, the original citadel of St. Petersburg which today forms the central part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. Spend the afternoon at leisure before we head out to enjoy an evening performance at one of St. Petersburg’s excellent theatres.

DAY 22

ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

We make the most of our last full day in Russia, starting with a visit to Peterhof; Peter the Great’s Summer Palace. Wander the grounds and admire the palaces, gardens and fountains. We then head to Catherine’s Palace to admire its lavish Rococo interiors. This evening we celebrate our wonderful trip with a group farewell dinner.
